Does "free” software mean, that I do not have to pay for it?

Well, you do not have to pay for free software, that is correct. But free software is "free" within the meaning of "free exchange of information" (like it is done by Wikipedia). Free software means the right to change the source code. You can change the source code, adjust it to your needs, re-use it, copy it etc.
